![]() ![]() Here we briefly review these two unit systems and the conversion between two systems. This book only uses the international unit system. In short, there are two unit systems in nonlinear optics: International system (MKS/SI) and Gaussian system (cgs/esu). This unit system also can be called the electrostatic unit system (i.e., esu system). There are two different unit systems commonly used in nonlinear optics: one is the international system (System International, SI), or called the practical unit system to use the units of Meter, Kilogram and Second (i.e., MKS system) other one is the Gaussian system to use the units of centimeter, gram and second (i.e., cgs system). Thus we have proved the K–K relation expressions ( 2.3.4) and ( 2.3.5) in the linear polarization. Boyd, Nonlinear Optics, Appendix C, 3rd Edn. A plot of the nonstandard polarization ellipse is shown below. Nevertheless, the field components E x (z,t) and E y (z,t) continue to be time-space dependent. In the equation, the time-space propagator has been explicitly eliminated. Bloembergen et al., Interactions between light waves in a nonlinear dielectric. Because the equation refers to polarized light, the equation is called the polarization ellipse. Bloembergen, Nonlinear Optics (Benjamin, NY, 1965) ![]()
